Before you go to a Balmain show, you already know what you’re going to get. It’s easy to say this about so many fashion brands: they are what they are, they do what they do – but with Balmain it’s a little bit different. It’s shoulders always, it’s flashy, it’s fun. It’s a bit brash, bold and big. Essentially it’s out to make an impact and today did so in its usual Eighties-infused way, only this time with more sparkles and crystals to make it even more bling than last time.
Chain belts, monochrome houndstooth with bubble gum pink, quilted bomber jackets, off-the-shoulder dresses and leather boiler suits – everything about this collection had a trophy quality about it. Especially the stellar casting that saw Rosie Huntington Whiteley, Georgia May Jagger, Edie Campbell, Cameron Russell, Saskia de Brauw, Kasia Struss and Magdalena Frackowiak all take to the catwalk.
Pinstripes, checks and plenty of ruffles to pull skirts into shape at the front – this was definitely a much more fun and easy collection from Rousteing and those dresses were ready to be taken out for cocktail hour circa 1983 as Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s “Relax” played out. And who, three capitals down and just one left to go, doesn’t want to relax as we enter the last leg of fashion month?
