‘Nikey’ not ‘Nike’ – Nike is one of the most well-known sports brands in the world, but a lot of people don’t know how the name is pronounced. Thanks to two creative students, Ben Martin and Kendal Peters, who had a friendly bet, sent a letter to Philip Knight, the chairman of Nike, to settle the question. We now know what the right pronouncination is. It is ‘Nikey’, not ‘Nike’.
‘We included a stamped addressed envelope inside the letter so that he could simply circle the answer and send it back to enlighten us all. We didn’t actually think that he would do it. But all credit to him, a few weeks later the letter returned!’
It’s not the first time people are questioning how the name of a well-known brand should be pronounced. Last year Steve Wilhite, the creator of the Gif graphics format, told the New York Times that he was ‘annoyed’ there was still a debate over the name. He added that the Oxford English Dictionary was wrong to say it could be pronounced both ways. He said his invention should be pronounced starting with a ‘j’ rather than with a hard ‘g’.
