David Bowie and Arizona Muse star in Louis Vuitton ‘L’Invitation au Voyage’ Campaign – He’s ditched his catsuits, but David Bowie’s style continues to inspire everyone from Lady Gaga to Jean Paul Gaultier and now the pop legend has lent some of his Ziggy Stardust to a Louis Vuitton campaign. David Bowie – real name David Jones – appears in the second installment of Vuitton’s “L’Invitation au Voyage” multi-media project alongside model Arizona Muse, who has previously fronted ads for DVF, Next and Miu Miu.

The supermodel, 25, and singing style icon, 66, shot the fashion film in Venice over the summer and it is set for release via an app on November 7th. In the first episode from the series, launched last year we saw Muse – the Louis Vuitton woman – running through the world’s greatest museum, the Louvre, before escaping into the Paris sky in her getaway vehicle of a choice – a red and white hot air balloon, natch – with a letter in hand.

While the first “L’Invitation au Voyage” was created by photographer-slash-director duo Inez and Vinoodh – who are also responsible for Gaga’s Applause promo – the second installment is the work of Romain Gavras, who has previously worked with M.I.A.. It begins with Arizona and her hot air balloon landing in Venice’s Piazza San Marco before being serenaded by Bowie who performs a version of “I’d Rather Be High” while playing the harpsichord. The song then becomes the soundtrack for a fantastical ball – before Vuitton’s muse Muse opens her eyes as if awakening from a dream to find an empty room. She then departs on an ancient Chinese boat – another practical mode of transport.

Frederic Winckler, Vuitton’s communication and events director, says of snagging David Bowie to appear in the ad, “He’s a client and someone who has a natural link with the brand. He liked the character, the role he was asked to play.” The campaign comes at the end of what has been a fantastic year for the pop star, which also included the release of his first studio album in over a decade and an exhibition of his costumes at London Victoria & Albert Museum.

L’Invitation Au Voyage – Campaign Film 2012

Paris and its mysteries… For centuries, the most wonderful intrigues have been woven in the Louvre, a haven of culture and history.

An intrepid young woman enters this universal temple and unwinds the skein of time. After an encounter with the Mona Lisa and the Italian masters, armed with a key, she releases the secrets — also desired by a man hot on her heels — enclosed for more than 150 years in a legendary trunk created by Louis Vuitton.

Like a thread stretching across time and space, a hot-air balloon rises above the Cour Carrée. The beautiful unknown woman leaves the Louvre for a far-off destination in pursuit of her destiny.

Directed by Inez and Vinoodh.
