In the hills of the Cote d’Azur, is the enchanting town of Grasse, where in smells intensly like flowers, from may until oktober. The jasmine, mimosa and orange blossoms are used in perfumes from famous fashion houses like Chanel and Dior.
When the first nightingale sings, the inhabitans of Grasse know, the summer is coming. In this time of year this town in the south of France smells like flowers. This is caused by three big perfume houses Molinard,Galimard and Fragonard. In May the first perfume roses are being harvest and this goes ont until Oktober. The charming and ancient town of Grasse is an ideal place for a tourist to visit. It is about an hours drive from Cannes, Antibes and Nice. It has a very mild climat and the surroundings are really beautifull
Grasse was once known for its tanneries and gloves shops. When in the siteenth it became in fashion to perfume gloves, because of the leather scent. The local perfume industry was born.
Nowadays in the fields around the village, lavender, geranium, orange blossom, mimosa and violets are blooming in large quantities.
Chanel is cultivating the rare “may rose” here and Dior its Jasmine. Both ingredients are indispendable for the perfumes of these houses. More than sixty percent of France’s natural flavouring for the perfume industry is produced in Grasse.
Walking through the narrow streets, visitors enjoy the smells and beautifull colours of this unique place. The teracotta facades, some ochre yellow, refelect the sunlight. Shutters in constrasting green and blue are light colored, by the lavishing sun.
Residents and tourists mingle on the lively terraces at the cafés. Also dining happenes preferably outdoors on a veranda overlooking the green slopes. The French cuisine is represented here at Star level. This perfume and flowers city is an excellent location for a short break.
